The Deer Isle Death Race announced on January 26, 2021 gave players a high-altitude course and the freedom to choose their own route to the finish. Traps, infected and wildlife made that choice matter.
Race the course, not each other
It was a PvE event, and killing other entrants was against the rules. Joining also meant accepting the risk of losing your gear. There was one first-place prize, and no guaranteed lift home afterward.
It was a different way to spend a session on Deer Isle: pick a route, get through the hazards and make it to the finish.
